Sanctuary and Renew Magazines
After more than four decades of Renew magazine and over twenty years of Sanctuary, both magazines will publish their final editions at the end of 2026, making way for Renew Home, launching in March 2027.
Renew began in 1980, when solar and home-built wind power were the territory of a determined few. Sanctuary followed in 2005, and showed Australians that a sustainable home could be beautiful as well as efficient. Neither would have existed without an extraordinary community behind it: writers, technical experts, photographers, designers, architects and builders who shared their knowledge and craft; homeowners who opened their doors and told us honestly what worked and what it cost; and members, subscribers and volunteers who backed independent publishing for decades. Together you helped take sustainable housing from the fringe to the mainstream, and we are deeply grateful.
Design, thermal performance and household energy are now so closely connected that it no longer makes sense to split them across two titles. Rising energy bills and a changing climate call for clear, practical guidance in one place. Renew Home will bring together the best of both, combining Sanctuary’s houses, plans and design with Renew’s practical technical knowhow. It will be produced to the same high standard readers expect from Sanctuary. It’s one magazine, simpler to subscribe to, still independent, still evidence-based and still delivered to your door. We can’t wait to share it with you.
