Sustainable House Day 2025 Impact Report

Sustainable House Day 2025 brought practical climate action into homes and communities across the country, reaching more Australians than ever before. The hybrid program combined 161 in-person open homes with a rich online offering, including 240 home profiles and a national webinar series. Thousands of people stepped inside real homes or joined online sessions to see electrification, retrofits and energy-efficient design in action, with video tours attracting more than 13,000 views.

The event focused strongly on electrification and retrofitting, reflecting growing national interest in reducing emissions, moving off gas and preparing homes for climate impacts. More than two-thirds of featured homes were first-time participants, demonstrating a growing grassroots movement of households willing to share their experiences. The diversity of projects—from tiny homes and co-housing to major renovations—showed that sustainable living is achievable in every postcode and for a wide range of budgets. This year saw a large new cohort of homeowners who participated in the open home event, demonstrating growing community interest in home sustainability. Right across Australia people are keen to reduce their energy bills, get off polluting and expensive gas in their homes, and have a home that is comfortable and safe in the face of extreme temperatures.

Most importantly, the event is translating inspiration into real action. Over 70% of visitors said they were likely to make energy efficiency or sustainability upgrades within the next year, highlighting the program’s impact on household decisions. Supported by community organisations, councils, sponsors and a strong media campaign that reached millions, Sustainable House Day continues to grow as a national, community-powered movement helping Australians create comfortable, affordable and climate-resilient homes.

Sustainable House Day was followed by 8 online webinars that showcased sector leaders sharing their thinking on topics like retrofitting for resilience, home electrification systems and “ask your [sustainable] builder”. These popular webinars gave the community the change to listen and learn from the experts, and pitch their own questions directly. Thank you to those who shared their wisdom and insights!

Sustainable House Day 2025 was a fabulous opportunity for homeowners to open their doors and share their sustainability stories with their local community – from exciting new builds that showcased the best of green technologies to modest retrofits that demonstrated how to get off gas, there were learnings for everyone.
