Presentation: There has been a recent move towards the use of Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) and prefabrication of buildings in Europe. This presentation will focus on the materials and technology used in Germany and Austria. The use of CLT in building can bring design flexibility as well as being a renewable material. It also lends itself to prefabricated construction methods and improved thermal performance.
Speaker: Professor Karl Zankl is from the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (FH-WS) in Germany – an institution focusing on architecture and engineering. He is a specialist in timber construction and heritage buildings. He completed his studies in at TU-Munich in 1993 and after a range of research support roles, worked for the office of L7 as a planner and architect. Since 2009 he has been a Professor at FH-WS.
