In off-grid rural areas of Timor-Leste, solar energy is often the only electrical option to facilitate the provision of essential services. Electricity provides light to study for exams or to deliver a baby at night, power to recharge phones and operate computers and printers, and energy for record keeping and printing educational materials.
For 18 years, Renew has worked with communities in Timor-Leste to provide clean, renewable lighting and electricity to people living in remote rural villages.
Earlier this year, Renew made the decision to bring our engagement in Timor-Leste to a close by June 2021. As organisations globally felt the pinch of this difficult year, Renew decided to focus on its core mission to help Australian’s live more sustainably.
We are incredibly proud that the program has reached a point that our capable local partners can drive forward many aspects of our work, and though it is sad to say goodbye, we are excited to see how it will evolve in the coming years.
Between now and June 2021 we will honour our agreements and assist our partners with this transition, giving them the tools they need to continue great work in the future. This year’s Gift of Light campaign will be used to help support the transition for our partners in Timor through training resources, working capital, solar equipment, and spare parts.
Early next year we will be publishing a history of our work in Timor Leste, which will be dominated by personal memories and reflections. We will give our donors the first opportunity to order the publication, before it is advertised to the general public.
Below, you will find several options for donating to our final Gift of Light campaign. Thank you for all of your support.
All donations of $2 or more are fully tax-deductible. A receipt will be issued for tax purposes.
Thank you for your generous support.
