Join us for an inspiring exploration of how a Newcastle family transformed a late-1800s workers cottage into a highly functional 80-square-metre home for two adults and two growing children.

Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, homeowners Ashley and Eliza embraced the idea that ‘the greenest house is the one that already exists’. Working with Curious Practice, they retained the original cottage and created a modest rear extension that makes clever use of light, outdoor space and hardworking materials.

The design blurs the boundary between inside and out, using sliding doors, continuous decking and translucent polycarbonate to make the compact living spaces feel open and generous and ensure the family remain connected to the breezes, weather and changing seasons.

The project also demonstrates how reclaimed materials and relatively affordable products can be elevated through careful detailing.
