Tim Stewart once rang the policy desk at the at the Federal Department of Road Transport in Canberra and asked what would happen if he imported his dream pedel-ec from Holland in 2007. – “The electric motor is too big- so it would be shipped back or scrapped at your expense…”. Eleven years later, unperturbed by broken dreams, Tim is still working on his version of a cargo carrying, commute friendly electric assist trike that meets many of his requirements to be car-free again. This talk will go through the many detours and dead-ends encountered when trying to complete your electric bike.
- what it’s like to DIY an eBike (10 years of hair tearing out experience on this front!)
- homebuilt vs commercially available pedelec options
- legislative considerations & safety
- a list of suppliers, knowledge sources and local talent
- exciting new developments in Newcastle (cycle repair cafes and community eBike workshops)
An electric ute-trike and an electric cargo bike will be on display.
