Presentation: Whether you are building a new home or renovating an existing one, every building material comes with an environmental cost. These principles can help guide your choice of sustainable materials and construction systems. By selecting ecological materials and using sustainable construction practices you can make significant improvements to the comfort, health and cost- effectiveness of your home whilst greatly reducing its life cycle environmental impact.

Dick Clarke is the Principal of Envirotecture and Director of Sustainability of the Building Designers Australia’s NSW chapter. Join us in hearing Dick discuss his experiences from 35 years of environmentally sustainable building design, including topics such as:

  • High embodied energy materials and ecological substitutes, e.g. Concrete vs Hempcrete.
  • Comparison of benefits, thermal performance, waste minimisation, recycling and reuse potential including life cycle analysis.
  • The future of ecological/sustainable building materials, what can we expect?

Speaker: Dick has a Master of Sustainable Futures degree from UTS. He is also a past President and Board Member of the Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA). He is the editor of the book “How to Rethink Building Materials” and has had a major role in the Australian Government’s highly acclaimed “Your Home” design guide. He was also involved in BASIX and the NatHERS to AccuRate upgrade. Dick has been Design Director of many hundreds of projects with the ever-changing understanding of what sustainability means. His specialties extend from passive design to zero net energy buildings.

How to get to the Meeting
The ITAMS Building (233) is in south-western corner of Innovation Way, in the University’s Innovation/East Campus (not the main campus). The campus has two entrances:
The eastern entrance is from Squires Avenue, into Puckey Way, the western entrance is from Montague Street, into Puckey Way.
About half way along Puckey Way there is an intersection where you turn south into Innovation Way. The ITAMS building is on the right/western side towards the end.
Best parking is probably in area P7, just past the ITAMS Building. Parking is free after 6:30 pm.

Members and visitors are welcome. We hope to see you there,

Greg Knight, Interim Convenor
